of all, i mean, i think it's pretty clear from the convention and from the debate last week, mitt romney is a shameless lying chameleon. he will say anything, he will do anything. the same is true with his running mate, paul ryan. unfortunately, we'll probably hear more of that this week. we do have a great surrogate team and they're on the ground in their respective cities or states. they move around. i certainly move around. you talk about deval patrick, i'm in chicago, rahm emanuel, stephanie rawlings-blake in baltimore, kasim reed, the list goes on and on. we have the best candidate in president obama and vice president biden. we have the greatest surrogate team, and they're on the ground in those places where there are real people with real issues and real problems, and they're talking about the things that the president talks about, jobs and the economy, health care, education, energy, and tax reform. those are the president's themes. he's never walked away from any of those issues, and it's easier, i think quite frankly, for mitt romney to have multiple positions on the same issue

weeks, both campaigns have been trying to lower spectateses for their performance, mitt romney appears to have won that. the gal hop poll -- gallup poll shows most americans think president obama will win the debates which is what romney wanted people to think so he could overcome lower expectations and appear to overachieve tonight but it shows a certainant of doubt in the american public about his debate skills. he has reached a point in the last few days where he recognizes there is a industry amount riding on this and he has to show to the american people he is a capable, able, and likable would-be president who provides necessary specifics to persuade people that there is a reasonable affirmative vote they can cast in his favor. that does not exclude his ability to go after president obama and make the case with the biden remark from yesterday about the middle class being buried, or the president's remarks about redistribution going back several years, that the obama agenda will not like the economy. >>shepard: what superstitions does your candidate have? >>carl: no real hard work

poll showed mitt romney pulling into the lead in the white house. in a week of high-profile e vents, he's beating president obama by four points in the pugh research poll this morning. tom fitzgerald has been looking at the poll. some of the folks who put it together. how much are those new poll results affected by last week's debate? >> reporter: you can't underestimate it, will. we spoke with the directorate the pugh research center and he said clearly the impact of last week's debate is having a big impact on the poll numbers and romney's new lead over the president. the new poll out shows the thapresident obama is trailing mitt romney 49-45% and that is romney's first big lead and the margin of error was covered by this and since he won the republican nomination in august and as recently as last month. romney was trailing the president. and romney is looking ahead and looking to build on the lead. the associate director of the p gushing h research center told us the result shows the president is slipping with key groups since last week's debate while romney is making strong gains, e

? >> i think this vice presidential debate is important because mitt romney won so big last week on wednesday night. the question for paul ryan is can he protect in a way mitt romney's achievement and can he consolidate it and after the romney debate after the ryan debate in a sense can it confirm what romney did. i think it is a very important moment. vice president biden will try very hard to retrospecktively discredit mitt romney's victory. he will say maybe obama was off his game a little. he won't say that but implication. all lies, deception, flip flopping, big mirage that you saw for 90 minutes. biden is going to come incredibly hard at romney. ryan has to defend romney and in effect consolidate romney's gains. like coming in in the second leg of a relay race. your team is ahead and you got to hold the lead and got to, of course, attack the obama biden record but above all sort of consolidate what romney did in the first debate and not let biden undercut it. >> geraldo: so you think that joe biden has to do something the president did not. he has to take it to his opponent
in the debate this past week between governor romney and barack obama. the argument for most of this year barack obama has been hitting mitt romney on war on women, arguing he is a waging a war on women. trying to scare women voters what life would be like under a romney presidency. mitt romney for a long time has a way of dealing with this, you saw this in particular in the convention try to make himself more likeable, talk about how he was a good husband and good father and good things he had done for people. that wasn't necessarily working. the point of the column what you saw him do at debates this week instead make his policy arguments. to instead go out there, clearly explained how he is going to help the middle class. in doing so, make all voters and women too realize that some of the things that he was putting forward could actually have a positive impact on their life. that went far more toward making him more likeable than some of his more overt actions. jenna: very interesting to see what changes can be made in just a short time. you mentioned the convention. quick final question here

at the debate, he did not have a good night and mitt romney came out on top in the debate this week. there have been a couple of distractions and things that he talked about that have come from the debate. we want to play about what he had to say about the battle over funding pbs. >> i'm sorry, jim, i'm going to stop the subsidy to pbs and stop other things. i like pbs and love big bird and actually like you, too. i'm not going to keep on spending money on things to borrow money from china to pay for it. >> shannon: jijim lehrer did nt look happy about the possibility of funding cut. big bird has been out talking about this. pbs released this statement saying as a supporter of education governor romney should be a supporter of public education yet he he is willing to wipe out services that reach the vast majority of americans. we know big bird was one of the big twitter hash tags and top ecktopics that night. is this a distraction now, this that we are having to talk about the battle over funding pbs. >> absolutely. a false choice as well. look at the particular. governor romney made it clear.
